You will have seen many references to the Duke of Windsor or the Prince of Wales, but who was he and why is he constantly being mentioned?
He was the eldest son of King Edward VII and a great influence on fashion during the 1930s. Whatever he wore was seized on and copied, just like any present day celebrity. The current Prince of Wales does not have the same influence.
The Duke was crowned King in 1936 but, because he wished to marry a divorcee, this was not acceptable in the UK. He therefore abdicated his title and the Dukedom was created especially for him. He had no children and it became extinct with his death in 1972. |
